About Dave
How ELA was born
I’m Dave – founder and the hands behind Electronics Labs Australia, based in Redcliffe QLD, specialising in key and remote repairs for everyday Aussies.
My love for electronics started when I was very young. I remember looking into the back of my grandma’s old radiogram watching the valves slowly warm up. Then I would tune into BBC London and other shortwave radio stations from around the world. Ever since I have had a passion for electronics and radio.
Years later, as Secretary of the Bundaberg Amateur Radio Club, I helped local students connect live with astronauts aboard the International Space Station, and even helped launch high-altitude balloons into near space with onboard cameras, radio equipment and telemetry.
The First Repair
The business itself began when a friend at Mister Minit asked if I could fix a Ford remote circuit board. I took it back to my home lab, repaired it, and returned it the next day. Soon he was sending more my way – mostly for customers who couldn’t afford a full replacement key. After advertising repairs to damaged car keys, demand grew and by 2022, Electronics Labs Australia was officially born.
After relocating to Redcliffe, I brought everything together: diagnostics, circuit board repairs, CNC key cutting, and a workshop where people can walk in, grab a coffee, and leave with a working key – usually in under 30 minutes.
I genuinely love what I do. I get a real thrill from bringing some of the worst-condition remotes back to life. (I get called “legend” a lot, but I prefer “miracle worker!”). 😊
When I’m not fixing keys, I’m usually creating something.
I enjoy making electronic artworks using circuit boards, LED lights, and microcontrollers. One of my pieces won an award at the 2024 Bundaberg Art Prize. You’ll find some of my art on display in the shop and are available for purchase. Stop by anytime if you would like to see them.
I also enjoy the hobby of amateur (ham) radio. I chat with other stations around the world and locally – It’s a great hobby! (my official callsign is VK4DN)
Come and say gidday at the Redcliffe Markets every Sunday. Or visit my shop in The Walk Arcade on Sutton Street, Redcliffe. (just near Bee Gees Way)
